In 1482, 11 years after the Portuguese stepped foot on the Gold Coast, they built the castle of Elmina – the first European settlement on the coast. From here they traded slaves, gold, knives, beads, mirrors, rum and guns. The news of the settlement travelled far and wide. The Abuja Carnival has become an annual fixture. Over one million Nigerians were present at the different events that kept the days of carnival agog with exciting and thrilling display of the diverse Nigerian cultures. The colours, elegance and cultural diversity were on show with masquerades, traditional circus performances, horsemanship and boat regatta at Jabi Dam. It was a happy time with lots of dancing to music and reveling in the euphoria of festive fun and strong sense of nationalism. Despite the heat, nationals and expatriates came out in droves to be a part of Nigeria's display of what can justifiably be the richest and most fascinating culture in the world. None so far like the Abuja carnival really. Imagine a nation of so many ethnicities, well over 300, with a population of about 140 million people celebrating each other in joy, extolling diverse cultural influence and the unity that can only be expressed as ‘proudly Naija’. Matter of fact is, most of Nigeria was on display: costumes, dance, music; culture! Notably is the similarity between the Caribbean and Latin American carnivals.
